Multiple factors are making the task of countering hunger in New Mexico more challenging than any time in recent history, Strittmatter says.

“We’re paying so much more and getting so much less in return in our work — to feed people,” she says.

Those challenges include the “three-headed monster” of rising food costs, fuel costs and freight costs. Plus, federal pandemic food aid dropped off in December 2021. And residents continue to struggle with food insecurity amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
