Las Cruces Bulletin: City launches largest affordable housing complex to date

Officials from the city of Las Cruces and Doña Ana County broke ground on a 144-unit affordable housing development on Oct. 10, with plans to double the development later this decade.

The development of Peachtree Canyon Apartments is the largest government-backed project meant to increase the supply of affordable housing in Las Cruces. Part of the funding stems from a voter-approved affordable housing bond.

“This will ensure affordability for decades to come,” said City Councilor Becky Corran.

The development is located on Las Cruces’ far east side, near Mesa Middle School, on the corner of Peachtree Hills and Jornada Road in the Metro Verde community.

Corran pointed out that Las Cruces estimates the city is 5,600 units short of meeting housing demand. That gap creates higher prices for existing homes and causes many people who can’t afford housing to become homeless.
